Sun Hung Kai dives as billionaire Kwok brothers arrested

HONG KONG (Reuters) - More than $5 billion was wiped off the market value of Sun Hung Kai Properties <0016.HK> on Friday, after the billionaire owners of Asia's largest real estate developer were arrested on suspicion of corruption.

Hong Kong's Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) arrested Raymond and Thomas Kwok in the agency's biggest investigation since it was set up in 1974 to root out what was seen as widespread corruption in the government and police.

Rafael Hui, a former No.2 official in the government, was also arrested, according to media reports. Hui resigned as an independent director of insurer AIA Group <1299.HK> late on Thursday.

The arrests on Thursday come just days after Hong Kong elected Beijing-loyalist Leung Chun-ying as its next leader, pledging land for cheaper public housing, and as soaring property prices, the most expensive in the world, have stirred public discontent. Home prices almost doubled in the five years to end-2011, according to real estate broker Knight Frank.

"This is not good for the image of Hong Kong, which used to have a high reputation for integrity," said Joseph Wong, a former senior government official and colleague of Hui. "The impression is that government policies tend to favor the rich tycoons, particularly rich property developers. These sort of cases will only add to the suspicions."

The two Kwok brothers and Hui were released late on Thursday but were expected to return for more questioning, according to a source familiar with the matter. Local media reporters said the brothers were still inside a Deepwater Bay luxury compound on the south side of Hong Kong on Friday.

The Kwoks are worth $18.3 billion, according to Forbes magazine, the second-biggest family fortune in Hong Kong after Asia's richest man, Li Ka-shing, founder of rival developer Cheung Kong (Holdings) <0001.HK>.

Shares in Sun Hung Kai slumped more than 15 percent to 15-week lows when they resumed trading on Friday. The company owns some of the former British colony's largest properties, including its tallest building, the International Commerce Centre that houses Morgan Stanley and the Ritz Carlton.

"This is justice. They're among the biggest, richest men in Hong Kong. The power of the property sector is too strong, but the business-government connection is the same around the world," Terry So,?an elderly chauffeur, told Reuters near the Sun Hung Kai Centre.

BUSINESS AS USUAL

Sun Hung Kai said the Kwoks would continue with their duties as chairmen and managing directors, and normal business operations would not be affected.

In the past two weeks, Sun Hung Kai has also disclosed that Thomas Chan Kui-yuen, in charge of project planning and land acquisitions, had been arrested for suspected bribery, and Chan Kai-ming, executive director of architectural and engineering services, had died, peacefully - meaning of the company's seven executive board members, three have been arrested, and one has died.

Hui, who, according to the Hong Kong Jockey Club website, has owned eight racehorses - two co-owned with Henry Tang, a loser in this month's leadership election - has been a long time adviser to Sun Hung Kai and has known the Kwoks since childhood.

Details of what is behind the arrests remain unclear.

The South China Morning Post reported that the ICAC was looking into suspected debts of more than HK$100 million ($12.9 million) linked to Hui, and a related, unsecured loan of HK$50 million.

Hui was Chief Secretary under Hong Kong's leader Donald Tsang in 2005-07, a post that would entitle him to government housing. But he chose to stay in his 4,000 square foot Leighton Hill apartment - a pink and tan marble residential tower that overlooks the Happy Valley racecourse and was developed by Sun Hung Kai.

The unfolding scandal has gripped Hong Kong, the world's most densely populated city which was returned to Chinese rule by the British in 1997.

"It's a sign they're trying to shift the power away from the tycoons," said Alaric Lau, a 45-year-old independent investor in equities and fixed income, who was walking near Hui's residence.

"These are three very prominent people in Hong Kong. The arrests are a sign of how they want to do things going forward ... there's no more favoritism that extends beyond the law ... it's a sign that the Chinese government is changing."

The potential conflict of interest in a senior government official living - rent-free, according to media reports - in an upscale residence owned by an influential property family has not escaped public and media attention.

"We always assumed there was something between property and government. Maybe there'll be more scandals.?I think it's a starting point in changing the relationship between government and developers," said Joe Lin, a young marketing professional, during a smoking break near the Sun Hung Kai offices.

Earlier this month, Tsang rejected allegations of ethics violations stemming from a yacht trip with tycoons and the controversial rental of a luxury flat in neighboring Shenzhen.

FAMILY FEUD

The Kwok family had a public feud in 2008 that ended with elder brother Walter being ousted as chairman. Thomas and Raymond, backed by their mother, claimed Walter was mentally unfit to run the business, claims Walter has denied.

That aside, the Kwok brothers - Thomas runs the company's construction and engineering departments, while Raymond looks after legal and financial issues - have a relatively low media profile.

Both are devout Christians, with Thomas the driving force behind a Noah's Ark replica theme park which opened in 2009.

A former company employee who didn't want to be named, said he was "very surprised and very sad" at the arrests. "They are men of integrity. Thomas would always repeat the company's mission - Building Homes with Heart - during meetings and ask staff to treat clients with a true heart," he said.

Others also expressed concern about the impact on Hong Kong's reputation for corporate governance.

"It's demoralizing to see another senior government official has been implicated in questionable behavior," said Jamie Allen, Secretary General of the Asian Corporate Governance Association. "Corporate governance rests on a foundation of clean and strong public government. If people start asking questions about the ethics of senior government officials, then they will start having more doubts about corporate governance."

A loan banker in Hong Kong, who asked not to be named as his bank is a lender to Sun Hung Kai, said there was unlikely to be any significant impact on the company's business.

"No one's going to start cutting their credit lines to the company. Sun Hung Kai isn't going bust because of this. It's not a (mainland Chinese) mid-cap, but a Hong Kong blue-chip with hard assets and very low gearing."

WALTER'S WRIT

In a writ filed in Hong Kong in 2008 as part of his bid to avoid his ouster, Walter Kwok said his brothers repeatedly disagreed with his attempts to improve management at the company. He also said he tried to investigate the sale of a parcel of land in Hong Kong's New Territories at more than the asking price, and look into why construction contracts awarded by Sun Hung Kai went to a select number of contractors.

"There's speculation that ... Walter sort of informed the ICAC that his two younger brothers could be in trouble. Those reports appeared before (last weekend's) Election Day," said Joseph Cheng, a professor in Chinese and Hong Kong politics at the City University of Hong Kong.

"I don't think we should connect this to CY Leung or read too much into the date," he told Reuters by telephone.

Gary Plowman, a former government prosecutor, said he had been to the ICAC and was representing one of the arrested parties, whom he declined to identify. "Nobody has been charged," he said.

"You wouldn't expect the ICAC to go after targets with as high a profile as these three unless they thought they were on fairly firm ground," said barrister Kevin Egan.

The ICAC had an 88 percent conviction rate on the 443 people it prosecuted in 2010.

Over the past four decades, Sun Hung Kai, listed in 1972, has built some of Hong Kong's most expensive property, from luxury hilltop apartment blocks and harbor-front skyscrapers to landmark office buildings.

The company's net profit has soared to HK$48 billion ($6.18 billion) in the year to last June from $10.4 billion two years earlier.

Should Investors Activate Gold and Silver Airbags? | Wall St. Cheat ...

Earlier this week, a fully loaded Brinks truck carrying between $3 million and $5 million in uncirculated loonies and toonies crashed on a snow covered highway in Ontario, Canada. The truck crossed the centre line and slammed into a rock, launching the coins in every direction. The accident is an unfortunate event, but can serve as an analogy about today?s fragile fiat currencies.

The current financial system serves as a global high-speed economic highway that is filled with many obstacles, including debt, bubbles and politics. Being the world?s reserve currency, the U.S. dollar is the truck that is one good bump away from losing control and crashing, causing a chaotic financial wreck. The U.S. official national debt now stands at over $15.6 trillion, representing about $140,000 per taxpayer. The record debt amount continues to increase as Washington gridlock is stronger than ever. The debt ceiling, which was raised last August to $16.394 trillion and initially expected to last well into 2013, is now estimated by Zero Hedge to be reached in September of this year. When Treasury Secretary, Timothy Geithner, was recently asked how much he would raise the debt ceiling if given only one more request, he responded, ?No idea.? After $20 trillion and $50 trillion were floated as ideas, he finally conceded, ?It would be a lot. It would make you uncomfortable.? The dire situation in Washington and the dollar is causing states to prepare for a bumpy road ahead.

In a bill that advanced on Tuesday, South Carolina residents would be able to use gold and silver coins as currency. The measure was approved by the House Judiciary Committee and would allow people to use both precious metals as money, as long as businesses agree to accept them. Under the bill, gold and silver coins in the state would also be exempt from any sales tax, an action that presidential candidate Ron Paul has long advocated. Eliminating sales and capital gains taxes on gold and silver are key steps to returning precious metals back to a normal currency role. Last year, Utah became the first state in the country to legalize gold and silver coins as currency. The Utah law also exempts the sale of the coins from state capital gains taxes.

Don?t Miss: Silver Goes Green

As more states and individuals prepare for future turmoil, Washington continues to look for more ways to abuse the nation?s currency. Geithner is currently trying to receive congressional permission to strip copper and other valuable metals from pennies and nickels. He told a House Appropriations Committee this week, ?Currently, the costs of making the penny and the nickel are more than twice the face value of each of those coins,? according to Philly.com. Since 1982, pennies are mostly made from zinc and only contain about 2.5 percent copper. Meanwhile, the nickel is composed of 75 percent copper and 25 percent nickel. Geithner hopes that minting changes ?will save more than $75 million? per year, starting next year. The U.S. nickel has not contained any silver since 1945 and silver was completely removed from quarters and dimes in 1965.

Although met with criticism, some governments are willing to eliminate certain circulated coins altogether. The Canadian government announced in its budget on Thursday it will withdraw its penny from circulation this year, hoping to save around $11 million annually. Finance Minister Jim Flaherty said, ?Pennies take up too much space on our dressers at home. They take up far too much time for small businesses trying to grow and create jobs,? according to Bloomberg. That may be true, but the move also helps to hide the debasement of currencies from the public.

While elevated gold and silver prices flash a warning light to governments and fiat currencies worldwide, the signal is ignored by many. Investors looking to protect and diversify themselves against the current global financial system should strongly consider deploying gold and silver airbags. Individuals not willing to purchase gold and silver may want to consider picking up some U.S. nickels, while they still contain copper.

Kyle Bass, the Hayman Capital fund manager who correctly predicted the credit bubble, is a big believer in gold, platinum and nickels. In Michael Lewis? latest book, Boomerang, Bass explained that he purchased a million dollars? worth of nickels, totaling twenty million nickels. Bass explained, ?I?m telling you, in the next two years they?ll change the content of the nickel. You really out to call your bank and buy some now.?

Tuning up for a festival | Lismore Music | Music Reviews, Concerts ...

MOJO is the Bluesfest's main stage which is set to host the biggest names on this year's bill including Cold Chisel, Earth, Wind and Fire, and John Butler Trio.

Set-up for the 2012 Byron Bay Blues Festival near Tyagarah is well under way with site manager Matty Williams and operations manager Nova Mikin over-seeing construction.

Jay Cronan

FIRST things first, the position is marked out with string.

The poles go up and the skins go on just before the stage is set up.

The PA is the last thing to go into the Mojo tent at Byron Bay's Bluesfest.

Mojo is the festival's main stage which is set to host the biggest names on this year's bill including Cold Chisel, John Fogerty, Earth, Wind and Fire, John Butler Trio and Yes.

Set-up started for the third year at the Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm on March 9, allowing just under a month to be ready for this year's festival.

The final touch on the festival site is the entry gates, said site manager Matty Williams.

"It starts off slow and ends up full on," he said yesterday.

"Most of the structures are up, but not the big tops.

"We wait as long as possible before putting them up in case of bad weather."

This year swales, blue metal gravel and a hot-mix poured on top will make the biggest difference for punters trekking from one stage to the next.

All up, with reshaping, grass cutting and weather proofing the process has taken a total of 10 months to complete.

"It's going to make a difference to a lot of areas with drainage and accessibility," Mr Williams said.

"The different routes are easier to get around without damaging the grounds. It keeps it all running smoothly."

For the hundreds of workers on site throughout the festival the work won't stop until a few weeks after the last note rings out on stage.

What's the one thing that really kicks it all off?

"The headlining set on the first night," Mr Williams said.

This year organisers are expecting 87,500 attendees across the five days, 95 acts performing on stage, 35 food stalls, 12 charity stalls and more than 50 market stalls.

And if all goes according to plan we won't be needing gumboots at all.

Bluesfest kicks off on Thursday. For more information head to bluesfest.com.au

89% In Darkness

Nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2012 Academy Awards, Agnieszka Holland's IN DARKNESS, is the poor man's SCHINDLER'S LIST, and I mean that as a high compliment. Now don't get me wrong. I think Spielberg made a masterpiece with his Shoah epic, but Holland earns astute emotions and mines similar themes yet in a more intimate setting. Based on the true story of a Polish sewer worker who charged a small group of Jewish refugees a daily fee to squat in the filthy sewers beneath the city. The title of the film is apt, as so much of it takes place in utter darkness. At almost two and a half hours in length, we feel every minute of their intensely long hiding. Like Schindler, our main character, Leopold Socha, played wonderfully by Robert Wieckiewicz, is an opportunist rather than a Jewish sympathizer. In fact, his anti-semitism is much more overt than Schindler's. On the other hand, his wife Wanda, an incredible Kinga Preis, is much more liberal at the outset, but wants to turn her back on the Jews when she fears for her life and that of her family. Their story is so searing, so vivid and unsentimental. It's no wonder I was more drawn to it than to the lives of the various Jews here. While all terrific actors who are given one horrifying scene after another to endure, their plight isn't as layered as that of Socha. There is one exception, and it's played by Benno Furmann, who is the love child of a Patrick Wilson/Josh Lucas bromance. Playing a man who leaves the sewers to escape INTO a concentration camp to save someone's life, he has leading man written all over her face. He easily commands the screen in all of his scenes. One of my all-time favorite critics, Roger Ebert, dismissed this film by saying that we've seen it all before. As much as I respect his opinion, I disagree. Usually films about this period in history tend to glorify the Jewish characters and they make every moment epic. IN DARKNESS does just the opposite. The Jews are just as flawed as any other characters here, as flawed as anybody would be when facing unreal, desperate circumstances. This is not a hyped up film. Something as simple as rainfall becomes an exciting action sequence, but it's played with an ingenious, dispassionate touch that Holland has always brought to her work.

Samsung Shipped 1 Million Galaxy Note Phablets A Month (Update)

Screen shot 2012-03-28 at 9.19.54 AMUpdate: The original press release for this announcement was in Korean only, and the translation left some room for debate over whether or not Samsung was talking about actual sales or shipments. But, we've received confirmation from Samsung that the 5 million figure is referencing actual sales to human beings and not shipments to retail channels. As much as I love Samsung hardware, I've felt for a long while now that the Galaxy Note was a bit of a mistake. The screen size is just too big for me to wield the device comfortably, and I see no real value in the S-Pen other than having a little fun during bored moments. But a good chunk of people out there in the world apparently disagree with me, as Samsung has just announced that the South Korea-based company has shipped sold 5 million units of the Galaxy Note phablet. At the start of this month, Samsung had sold 2 million Galaxy Notes globally ? a solid stat albeit not equal to Galaxy S II or iPhone 4S sales.

A political tip sheet for the rest of us

(AP) ? A political tip sheet for the rest of us outside the Washington Beltway, for Wednesday, March 28:

WHAT HAPPENED

HEAR YE-THIRD DAY: On the third day of Supreme Court arguments over President Barack Obama's health care overhaul, the justices sent signals that they could throw out key parts of the law if it first finds a requirement that individuals must buy health insurance is unconstitutional. On the final day of arguments, the court appeared to accept the administration's argument that at least two important insurance changes are so closely tied to the insurance requirement that they could not survive without it. Less clear was whether the court would conclude the entire law, with its hundreds of unrelated provisions, would have to be cast aside. The outcome of the case will affect nearly every American. The ruling, expected in June, also could play a role in the presidential campaign.

PRESIDENT 41: Former President George H.W. Bush is making it official Thursday and offering Romney his formal endorsement. The 41st president has had encouraging things to say about Romney throughout the campaign but had withheld his official backing. The Bush family has known Romney for years and the former president's wife, Barbara, and their son, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, both have endorsed Romney. So it seemed inevitable that the elder Bush would lend his support, too. Bush and Romney have scheduled a joint appearance Thursday afternoon at Bush's office in Houston.

GINGRICH: Newt Gingrich's campaign is getting a trim, again. But despite letting go a third of his staff and curtailing his campaign appearances, Gingrich says he will stay in the GOP race until front-runner Mitt Romney has the support he needs to become the nominee. Low on money, Gingrich's new strategy calls for him to spend less time campaigning and more time trying to persuade delegates to the party's national convention to back him. His campaign is also expected to begin emphasizing cheaper, digital outreach ? in particular YouTube, Twitter and other social media. Gingrich told a Washington, D.C., radio station that he owes it to his supporters to continue to represent their views, and that Romney has to earn the nomination.

ROMNEY'S PERSONAL SIDE: Expect to see a softer, gentler version of Romney in the coming weeks. Though his advisers reject the notion of a makeover or major shift in the campaign, it is typical for candidates to roll themselves out again in an effort to appeal to a broader swath of the electorate. The campaign is discussing how to present a more complete picture of Romney, from having him sit for TV interviews flanked by his five sons and 16 grandchildren to having his wife, Ann, appear on daytime talk or cooking shows. Ann Romney is likely to play a big role in introducing her husband to a wider audience. She has been a near constant companion on the campaign trail and aides say her mere presence softens his sometimes rough edges.

SANTORUM'S FRUGAL SIDE: Campaigning in Wisconsin, Rick Santorum suggested the state's primary should be decided in 10 frames. He spoke at South Lanes Bowling in La Crosse as he stood in bowling shoes for the third time in four days. Yet he wasn't eager to pay for everyone's outing. After a buffet lunch of pizza with a college Republican group, a waitress came around to let the co-eds know they still had a bill to pay. How come? Santorum's campaign had only paid for the candidate's meal. ? Contribution by Associated Press writer Philip Elliott.

BY THE NUMBERS:

A national CNN/ORC poll of registered voters finds Obama with a wide lead over Romney and Santorum. The poll, conducted March 24-25, has an error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

? Obama 54 percent, Romney 43 percent.

? Obama 55 percent, Santorum 42 percent.

? Obama approval rating among all Americans: 51 percent, practically unchanged from a CNN/ORC poll in February.

BY THE NUMBERS II:

More than three-fourths of adults, or 77 percent, say rising gasoline prices are straining their family budgets, according to a national McClatchy-Marist Poll. The survey of 1,080 adults was conducted March 20-22 and has an error margin of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

?37 percent say they've experienced a great deal of strain.

?40 percent say they've felt a moderate pinch at the pump.

?12 percent say the higher costs have not had much of a strain on their family finances.

?10 percent report no financial strain at all.

BY THE NUMBERS III:

A Quinnipiac University poll shows Obama ahead of Romney and Santorum in two key states, Florida and Ohio, with Pennsylvania a toss-up in an Obama-Romney match. The margin of error was plus or minus 3 percent.

?Florida: Obama 49, Romney 42; Obama 50, Santorum 37.

?Ohio: Obama 47, Romney 41; Obama 47, Santorum 40.

?Pennsylvania: Obama 45, Romney 42; Obama 48, Santorum 41.

OVERHEARD:

? "What happened to the Eighth Amendment? You really expect us to go through 2,700 pages?" ? Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, likening a reading of the administration's health care law to the constitutional ban on cruel and unusual punishment.

? "Everybody in the establishment is chanting that Santorum and I should quit. Romney has to earn this. It's not going to be given to him." ? Gingrich.

? "It's possible, but it's a long shot." ? Santorum, on odds of Republicans winning control of the Senate in November.

Astronomers say that there are billions of potentially habitable planets in our galaxy (+video)

A team of European astronomers say that about 40 percent of red dwarf stars - the most common type of star in the Milky Way - have at least one planet whose temperatures would allow liquid water on the surface.

Astronomers hunting for rocky planets with the right temperature to support life estimate there may be tens of billions of them in our galaxy alone.

Skip to next paragraph A team of planet hunters led by astronomers at the University of California (UC), Santa Cruz and the Carnegie Institution of Washington has announced the discovery of a planet orbiting a nearby star, Gliese 581, at a distance that places it squarely in the middle of the star's 'habitable zone.'

A European team said on Wednesday that about 40 percent of red dwarf stars - the most common type in the Milky Way - have a so-called "super-Earth" planet orbiting in a habitable zone that would allow water to flow on the surface.

Since there are around 160 billion red dwarfs in the Milky Way, the number of worlds that are potentially warm enough and wet enough to support life is enormous.

Xavier Bonfils of the Institute of Planetology and Astrophysics in Grenoble, the leader of the team, said the 40 percent figure was at the high end of what had been expected and the finding underscored the prevalence of small rocky planets.

His team is the first to calculate the number of super-Earths - planets with a mass between one and 10 times the Earth - in such habitable zones, although previous research has found the Milky Way to be awash with planets.

Red dwarfs, which are faint and cool compared to the Sun, account for around 80 percent of the stars in the Milky Way.

After studying 102 of these stars in the southern skies using a European Southern Observatory telescope in Chile, Bonfils and colleagues found rocky planets were far more common than massive gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn in our solar system.

However, the rocky worlds spinning around red dwarfs are not necessarily cosy places for alien forms of life.

Because reds dwarfs are much cooler than the sun, any planets with liquid water will need to be orbiting much closer to the star than the Earth is from the Sun. That may mean they are bathed in damaging X-ray and ultraviolet radiation.

Scientists aim to take a closer look at some of the Earth-like planets as they pass in front of nearby red dwarfs, which should yield information about their atmospheres and help in the search for possible signs of life.

The research was presented in a paper to be published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.?

KIRF Notes are the Slankets of the phablet world (video)

KIRF Galaxy Note
Today we've got a special treat for you: not one, but two knockoff Galaxy Notes from across the Pacific. Both lack the raw power of Sammy's 5.3-inch device, and even knock the resolution down to a paltry 800 x 480. Our first contestant is rockin' only a 1GHz single-core processor and 512MB of RAM, but it's using those rather pedestrian components to push ICS through its little 9.7mm thick body. The second of today's players certainly wins the audacity contest -- brandishing its clearly unearned Samsung logos. It also wins the spec war here by jumping up to 768MB of RAM and a dual-core CPU, even if the later is an asymmetrical design with a 650MHz ARM7 and a 250MHz ARM9 inside. It also trades up in the camera department going with an eight-megapixel sensor, though, it does settle for Gingerbread. Now all we have to do is think up a new name for the segment, it seems wrong to bless these KIRFs with the phablet name. We were thinking slone or phlate... either way, check out the bonus hands-on vid after the break.

Pope Benedict urges greater openness in Cuba

Pope Benedict XVI arrived in Havana Tuesday on the second day of his historic visit to Cuba, the first papal visit to the communist Caribbean island nation in 14 years. The pontiff is expected to meet with Cuban President Raul Castro and possibly his brother Fidel, the ailing former revolutionary leader. Latin America watchers said the Castro government has refused to allow any Cuban dissidents to meet with the pontiff, and resisted the pope's calls for greater openness. But the Cuban Catholic church has been energized by the visit, others said.

"For the Catholic Church in Cuba to have the Pope's blessing now ? with the role it is playing, engaging with the Cuban government ? is really huge," said Sarah Stephens, executive director of the Washington-based Center for Democracy in the Americas, in an email to Yahoo News, from Cuba Tuesday, where she is currently traveling.

"For the American audience, this is an important opportunity to give a broader U.S. public a lesson about the extent of religious freedom in Cuba and the willingness of the Cuban government to give the Pope a platform to talk about his aspirations for the Cuban people," Stephens said. "These things are not anticipated or understood given how cut-off Americans are from the complicated realities of Cuba."

Some scholars suggested the pope could push back on the Cuban government's refusal to allow dissidents to meet with him."The Cuban government removed any opportunity for dissidents to meet with the pope and be in meetings where he is," David Smock, director of the program on religious studies and peace-building at the U.S. Institute of Peace told Yahoo News Tuesday. "The pope can make a strong statement and insist he be allowed to do so, but he has not been inclined to do so so far."

The Catholic Church "has been in decline through the communist-Castro period," Smock noted. Only about 10 percent of Cuba's population is estimated to practice the faith.

"I think he's trying to revive it; that's the main purpose of his visit," Smock said. "I think he wants to make some statement about greater openness and transition to a freer society, but he's been very muted."

The pontiff did allude to wanting more freedom, but fell short of becoming political in his statements. "I have also prayed to the Virgin for the needs of those who suffer, of those who are deprived of freedom, those who are separated from their loved ones or who are undergoing times of difficulty," Pope Benedict XVI, 84, said at a chapel in the Cuban town of El Cobre, site of the statue of the Virgin of Charity of Cobre, the Associated Press reported.

Cuban officials bristled at the pope's calls for greater openness, however. "In Cuba there will not be political reform," Cuban economic czar Marino Murilla told foreign journalists covering the visit, the AP report said.

"I appeal to you to reinvigorate your faith ? that you may strive to build a renewed and open society, a better society, one more worthy of humanity," Pope Benedict said at a Mass Monday in the city of Santiago.

Ahead of the Santiago Mass, a man ran into the journalists' section yelling "Down with the Revolution! Down with the dictatorship!" before being led away, the AP reported, adding that Cuban dissidents were still trying to figure out who he was.

Separately, Judy Gross, the wife of an American USAID contractor imprisoned in Cuba, has asked the Vatican to appeal for her husband's humanitarian release during the pope's meetings with Cuban officials, the Washington Post reported. Alan Gross, 62, from Potomac, Md., was sentenced to 15 years in prison last year for bringing in Internet communications equipment under a USAID subcontract to help Cuba's tiny Jewish community. He has lost over 100 pounds in prison and both his mother and his daughter have been diagnosed with cancer, Gross's wife told the Post.

New Haven, Conn. A person's mere presence in a room can add 37 million bacteria to the air every hour material largely left behind by previous occupants and stirred up from the floor according to new research by Yale University engineers.

"We live in this microbial soup, and a big ingredient is our own microorganisms," said Jordan Peccia, associate professor of environmental engineering at Yale and the principal investigator of a study recently published online in the journal Indoor Air. "Mostly people are re-suspending what's been deposited before. The floor dust turns out to be the major source of the bacteria that we breathe."

Many previous studies have surveyed the variety of germs present in everyday spaces. But this is the first study that quantifies how much a lone human presence affects the level of indoor biological aerosols.

Peccia and his research team measured and analyzed biological particles in a single, ground-floor university classroom over a period of eight days four days when the room was periodically occupied, and four days when the room was continuously vacant. At all times the windows and doors were kept closed. The HVAC system was operated at normal levels. Researchers sorted the particles by size.

Overall, they found that "human occupancy was associated with substantially increased airborne concentrations" of bacteria and fungi of various sizes. Occupancy resulted in especially large spikes for larger-sized fungal particles and medium-sized bacterial particles. The size of bacteria- and fungi-bearing particles is important, because size affects the degree to which they are likely to be filtered from the air or linger and recirculate, the researchers note.

"Size is the master variable," Peccia said.

Researchers found that about 18 percent of all bacterial emissions in the room including both fresh and previously deposited bacteria came from humans, as opposed to plants and other sources. Of the 15 most abundant varieties of bacteria identified in the room studied, four are directly associated with humans, including the most abundant, Propionibacterineae, common on human skin.

Peccia said carpeted rooms appear to retain especially high amounts of microorganisms, but noted that this does not necessarily mean rugs and carpets should be removed. Extremely few of the microorganisms commonly found indoors less than 0.1 percent are infectious, he said.

Still, understanding the content and dynamics of indoor biological aerosols is helpful for devising new ways of improving air quality when necessary, he said.

"All those infectious diseases we get, we get indoors," he said, adding that Americans spend more than 90 percent of their time inside.

The researchers have begun a series of similar studies outside the United States.

Watching space weather through the MAGIC of CubeSat CINEMA

ScienceDaily (Mar. 27, 2012) ? A trio of CubeSats that will study the effects of space weather on Earth's radiation belts and magnetic field are being prepared for launch. TRIO-CINEMA is a collaboration between UC Berkeley, Kyung Hee University and Imperial College London. The first CINEMA CubeSat passed acceptance testing in January 2012 and will launch in mid-2012. Two more identical spacecraft will launch towards the end of the year. The mission will be presented by Professor Tim Horbury at the National Astronomy Meeting 2012 in Manchester on 27th March.

CINEMA will carry two science instruments: the SupraThermal Electron, Ion and Neutral (STEIN) sensor, provided by UC Berkeley, and the MAGIC magnetometer provided by Imperial College London. Both sensors represent technological leaps in miniaturised instrumentation and could have applications in a wide variety of space and planetary physics missions.

"CINEMA is part of the first generation of CubeSats to do world-class science," said Professor Bob Lin of UC Berkeley, who leads the CINEMA mission.

With a mass of just 500 grams, the tiny STEIN sensor will measure fast-moving charged and neutral particles and monitor the effects of magnetic storms, substorms, and particle precipitation on Earth's magnetic field, radiation belts and auroral zones. STEIN builds on technology developed for NASA's STEREO solar mission, but is able to differentiate between ions, electrons, and energetic neutral atoms (ENAs).

"These types of particle detectors have been used before but have been limited in energy and time resolution. STEIN will be unique in its capacity to make high sensitivity maps and movies of ENAs," said Horbury, of Imperial College London. "CINEMA will be in Low Earth Orbit at an altitude of a few hundred kilometres above Earth's surface, so STEIN will look upwards at the radiation belts. This will allow us to make longitudinal measurements around Earth, and particularly to look at the energised tail of Earth on the opposite side to the Sun."

The solar wind from the Sun hits Earth's magnetic field, causing it to vary. Magnetometers allow scientists to monitor these small variations, which can have large effects on near-Earth space, accelerating particles to high energies which can ultimately harm satellites. . The MAGIC instruments developed at Imperial are a new breed of magnetometer sensor that use a property called 'anisotropic magneto-resistance', in which the electrical resistance of a material depends on the angle between the electric current and the orientation of the magnetic field. From Low Earth Orbit, CINEMA will provide a crucial new measurement location between the magnetometers far from Earth, such as those carried by the Cluster mission, and those on the ground. CINEMA will therefore provide an essential measurement to track the motion of these disturbances from the solar wind, through near-Earth space and to the ground, giving us the best ever picture of how they are formed, move and their effects on space around us.

"CINEMA will provide the first opportunity to use this technology in space science," said Horbury. "MAGIC works on a completely different system from the big magnetometers carried by missions such as Cluster, Cassini and Rosetta. Although the MAGIC instruments are less sensitive than traditional magnetometers, if you want to have a global picture of what's happening in the Earth's magnetosphere, you need to have a lot of spacecraft providing measurements. The sensor head for MAGIC is incredibly tiny -- smaller than a Euro coin -- so it's ideally suited to fly on constellations of CubeSats."

Kyung Hee University in South Korea, the third partner in CINEMA, is providing two more CubeSats identical to CINEMA. This CINEMA-TRIO mission will open up possibilities for stereoscopic imaging of neutral atoms and observations of the magnetic field in three dimensions.

"Additional funding has recently been secured from the NSF and the US Air Force to build a further CINEMA CubeSat, so in time there should be four in operation," said Horbury. "The satellites should remain in orbit for up to 20 years. However, as the electronics are off-the-shelf components rather than space grade components, it's uncertain how long they will remain operational."

The STEIN instrument needs accurate pointing so, in a further innovation, CINEMA will be the first spin stabilised CubeSat. The team in Berkeley has developed a complete attitude control system for CINEMA.

"This has been a huge undertaking but should prove a good investment for the future," said Horbury.
