Dominican president welcomes conjoined twins (AP)

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic ? Two once-conjoined toddler girls from the Dominican Republic are getting a presidential welcome in their homeland.

President Leonel Fernandez and Dominican first lady Margarita Cedeno welcomed the girls upon their arrival from the United States. Later, an emotional Cedeno said in a public ceremony that the girls are "two angels" whose arrival Tuesday is like a Christmas gift.

Maria and Teresa Tapia and their mother and aunt flew in from Richmond, Virginia.

The girls underwent nearly daylong surgery Nov. 7 at Children's Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University. They were conjoined at the chest, and a team led by university surgeons divided their liver, pancreas and other shared organ systems and reconstructed their abdominal walls.

Syracuse coach Boeheim says he didn't realize extent of child abuse

Syracuse men's basketball coach Jim Boeheim said Saturday he'll go ahead with his campaign against child abuse even though he knows his motives will be questioned.

"We believed in helping kids long before this. I'm sure people are always going to question why you do something, but we're going to do this and continue to do it," Boeheim said in a phone interview with The Associated Press on Saturday morning. "We don't do it for what people might say."

On Friday night, Boeheim apologized for disparaging the men who accused his longtime assistant of molesting them as minors, saying his comments were especially insensitive to the overall issue of child abuse.

"I believe I misspoke very badly in my response to the allegations that have been made," said Boeheim, who spoke haltingly and paused frequently during a postgame press conference. "I shouldn't have questioned what the accusers expressed or their motives. I am really sorry that I did that, and I regret any harm that I caused."

Former assistant coach Bernie Fine has been accused of child sex abuse by three men, including two former Syracuse ballboys. Fine, who was fired Sunday, has denied the allegations.

Advocates for sex abuse victims had called for Boeheim to resign or be fired for his disparaging remarks.

Friday's apology marked the latest shift in Boeheim's attitude toward Fine's accusers.

When the allegations were first made public Nov. 17, Boeheim adamantly defended his longtime friend and vilified the accusers, saying they were lying and out for money.

After Fine was fired Sunday, Boeheim released a statement saying he regretted "any statements I made that might have inhibited that from occurring or been insensitive to victims of abuse."

On Tuesday, Boeheim said he didn't regret defending Fine and said he had never worried about his job status in 36 years.

Friday night, he fully apologized and insisted it came from the heart.

"No one said this is what you should say," he said. "This is what I feel."

"I reacted without thinking," Boeheim said about his initial response. "I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I'm trying to learn from my mistake. That's all I can say."

On Thursday, Boeheim and his wife, Juli, spent time at the McMahon Ryan House for child abuse in Syracuse.

"We started working with them last summer," he said Saturday. "We met with them the other day not just to be fundraisers but to bring more awareness to people in this area. In our area there's not enough as much awareness as there needs to be."

He said he was surprised to learn how many child abuse victims don't come forward.

"I don't think people realize how much abuse there is and how much work needs to be done," Boeheim said. "That's what I think I learned from talking to people at McMahon Ryan House; people don't realize the magnitude of this problem. I really don't, and it's something that needs to be addressed in this community. We have started to now realize we need to do more than ever."

One of Fine's accusers, Bobby Davis, now 39, told ESPN last month that Fine molested him beginning in 1984 and that the sexual contact continued until he was around 27. A ball boy for six years, Davis said the abuse occurred at Fine's home, at Syracuse basketball facilities and on team road trips, including the 1987 Final Four. Davis' stepbrother, Mike Lang, 45, who also was a ball boy, told ESPN that Fine began molesting him while he was in the fifth or sixth grade.

A third accuser, 23-year-old Zach Tomaselli of Lewiston, Maine, came forward Sunday. He said he told police that Fine molested him in 2002 in a Pittsburgh hotel room after a game. He said Fine touched him "multiple" times in that one incident.

The U.S. Attorney's Office and the U.S. Secret Service are leading the investigation.

Stock futures little changed after powerful rally (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Stock index futures were little changed on Thursday after the S&P 500 posted its best gains since August in a powerful rally in the previous session.

Equities surged Wednesday after major central banks in a joint action agreed to make cheaper dollar loans for struggling European banks to prevent the euro zone debt crisis from worsening. The Dow posted its best day since March 2009, and both the Dow and S&P rose more than 4 percent.

S&P 500 futures dipped 1.3 points and were below fair value, a formula that evaluates pricing by taking into account interest rates, dividends and time to expiration on the contract. Dow Jones industrial average futures rose 3 points, and Nasdaq 100 futures added 0.5 point.

"The indexes enjoyed one of their best days in recent memory yesterday. The moves were strong enough to break above all of the resistance levels we began with yesterday morning," said Bryan McCormick, analyst at optionMonster.com in Chicago.

"Previous resistance levels are now support and back to where they were closer to the peak in October."

Potentially curbing sentiment, China's factory sector shrank in November in the face of weakening demand both at home and abroad. The data may feed worries the global economy was sputtering.

European stocks were also trading near flat after posting strong gains in the previous session as the market awaited more details from policymakers about plans to help end the debt crisis.

Spain will be in focus ahead of a bond auction, with analysts warning the sale could go like the one by Italy on Tuesday that drew reasonable demand but saw yields leap.

Yahoo Inc (YHOO.O) shares were up 5 percent at $16.50 in premarket trade after Reuters reported Blackstone Group LP (BX.N) and Bain Capital along with Asian partners were preparing a bid in a deal valued at about $25 billion.

Kroger Co (KR.N), the largest U.S. supermarket chain, will announce quarterly results.

AT&T Inc (T.N) and T-Mobile USA's parent Deutsche Telekom AG (DTEGn.DE) may form a joint venture to pool the wireless operators' network assets if AT&T's proposal to buy T-Mobile USA fails, the Wall Street Journal reported.

A day after a set of encouraging economic data, the market will focus on the Labor Department's latest report on the jobs market, with the release at 8:30 a.m. EST of weekly jobless claims. Economists forecast a total of 390,000 new filings, compared with 393,000 in the prior week.

The Institute for Supply Management releases its November manufacturing index at 10 a.m. EST. Economists expect a reading of 51.5 versus 50.8 in October.

The Commerce Department reports on October construction spending at 10 a.m. Economists forecast an increase of 0.3 percent, compared with a 0.2 percent rise in September.

The Federal Reserve releases weekly money stock, liquid assets and debt measures and the weekly report on factors affecting reserves of depository institutions and the condition statement of the Federal Reserve banks at 4:30 p.m. EST.

Workers mass at Shanghai factory in latest unrest (AP)

SHANGHAI ? Hundreds of laid-off workers massed Friday outside a Shanghai factory of a Singaporean supplier to major consumer electronics companies such as Motorola and HP ? the latest in a spate of labor unrest in China as manufacturers struggle with higher costs and slowing exports.

Reports of recent strikes at factories and other major employers show the increased pressure on China's manufacturers and workers amid weak demand in Europe and the U.S. that comes on top of surging costs for labor and materials. The country's manufacturing contracted in November for the first time in nearly three years, according to a survey released Thursday.

A nervous Beijing has begun reversing a two-year effort to cool the world's second-biggest economy, seeking to counter slowdowns in factory production and property that are dragging growth lower and spurring unrest.

Some of the 300-400 workers at the factory gate of Hi-P International in the eastern industrial suburbs of Shanghai said it was their third day of protesting over mass layoffs due to the company's decision to relocate some manufacturing.

They said they were seeking more information, and improved terms for themselves.

A group of the workers, bundled up against the cold, held up a banner demanding: "We want an explanation! We want truth! Where is Hi-P's truth? Where is the government's credibility?"

Workers also accused the factory of violating labor standards.

"Sometimes, they ask us to work 18 or 19 hours in a day. Sometimes the overtime is even longer than a normal 8-hour work day," said Tao Yong, a worker in his mid-30s.

Police in vans and unmarked cars watched but did not intervene. One worker showed bruises he said were from an earlier beating by police.

Company officials contacted by phone in Shanghai and Singapore refused comment on the protest. Shanghai city government and police also did not immediately respond to inquiries about the strike or the workers' claims of injuries from scuffles with police.

"We all work for this company, and now if the company is going to move, they owe us an explanation. So we are waiting for a solution," said Chang Yan, a woman in her mid-20s who like most of the others was wearing a blue factory uniform embossed with a red Hi-P logo.

Reflecting the tougher times for manufacturers, Hi-P International's net profit margin plunged 80 percent from a year earlier in third quarter to 2.1 percent from 11.6 percent ? mainly due to higher costs. Net profit in July-September fell 42 percent to 6.5 million Singapore dollars ($5.1 million) from a year earlier, according to its latest financial report.

The company, founded in 1980 as a tooling factory, said its third-quarter revenue rose 34 percent, but so did costs for materials and taxes.

The New York-based group China Labor Watch said Hi-P was shifting some of its production to the nearby city of Suzhou and had not paid the legally required amount of compensation to workers, who were laid off without notice.

According to its website, Hi-P International is a contract manufacturer for the wireless telecommunications, consumer electronics and computing and automotive industries, with two-dozen factories and about 18,000 employees.

Hi-P has factories in five other Chinese cities besides Shanghai and Suzhou. Motorola and other major electronics companies are among its customers.
